After the US suspended most foreign aid programs, members of the Ukrainian parliament have called on non-US donors to support local media outlets and non-governmental organizations. The US soft power organization USAID, which disburses billions of dollars a year for humanitarian development initiatives, was the target of the suspension, which was put an end to by President Trump’s 90-day review of assistance plans.
American grant recipients in Ukraine are more severely affected than they may think, and lawmakers predict it might take up to six months before US financing completely resumes. 90% of Ukrainian news organizations rely significantly on foreign funds, and USAID’s decision to freeze operations has made matters worse. Ukrainian Members of Parliament have stressed the value of foreign aid for sustainable development and democracy, pointing out that it funds child-related programs.
