President Donald Trump’s effort to suspend $2 billion in foreign assistance payments was denied by the US Supreme Court in a 5-4 verdict. The court decided that when aid contracts are finished, payments should be made. The federal judge who ordered the resumption of payments for contracts with the State Department and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) ought to make clear what the government is expected to do, the court added. The conservatives who voted with the liberals won a big win with the decision.
In their dissenting opinions, Justice Samuel Alito and the other conservatives questioned the unbridled authority of a single district-court judge to order the government to spend $2 billion of public money. Declaring that Trump’s effort to stop financing for international aid was a dangerous and unprecedented misuse of presidential power, the American Civil Liberties Union applauded the ruling. With a focus on USAID, Trump has initiated a drive to reduce or eliminate the US government, spearheaded by his top contributor, Elon Musk.
