Madhes Chief Minister Yadav resigns

Madhes Province Chief Minister Saroj Kumar Yadav has resigned after the Supreme Court ordered a vote of confidence within 24 hours. He announced his resignation in the Provincial Assembly meeting today as there was no possibility of getting a vote of confidence. Yadav was appointed as the Chief Minister by the then Provincial Chief Sumitra Subedi Bhandari as the leader of the largest party in the Provincial Assembly as per Article 168930 of the Constitution.

Yadav’s appointment and oath-taking ceremony at Panas Cottage in Bardibas in the morning had further fueled political controversy. Meanwhile, the federal government had recommended the removal of Provincial Chief Bhandari and the appointment of Surendra Labh Karna as the new Provincial Chief.

During the vote of confidence process, MPs from seven opposition parties did not attend the meeting. While the entire opposition bench remained vacant, only UML MPs were present in the meeting. RPP Minister Kanchan Bichha and Nepal Federal Socialist Party Minister Bimala Ansari were also present.

Before resigning, Chief Minister Yadav claimed that since his appointment was binding, there was no need to take a vote of confidence. Stating that his 22-day tenure was focused on public-facing work, he said, “I will take a vote of confidence not from the chair, but from the MPs. However, they did not come to the meeting. Therefore, I am announcing my resignation.”

Deputy Speaker Babita Raut Iser, who was conducting the meeting, adjourned the meeting, saying that there was no need to proceed with the vote of confidence process since Chief Minister Yadav had already announced his resignation.
