US President Donald Trump has announced that he will meet with Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado in Washington next week. President Trump said in an interview with Fox News that Machado will visit Washington next week to meet.
The first meeting between the US president and Machado comes a week after US forces arrested Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife and took them to New York to face charges of drug and weapons trafficking. Last week, Trump reportedly suggested that Machado was unfit to lead the country in Venezuela and that the US could control Venezuela for years.
He told Fox News that the South American country, currently led by interim President Delcy Rodriguez, is not in a position to hold new elections. Trump said Machado had offered to share his Nobel Prize with him, and that it would be the greatest honor for him.
