Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney dies at 84

Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney has died at the age of 84. Mulroney was born into a working-class family in Baie-Comeau, Quebec, and began his political career as a university student studying political science. He worked as an adviser to Prime Minister John Diefenbaker and was defeated in his first campaign to become the federal Progressive Conservative leader in 1976. In 1983, he won the Progressive Conservative Party leadership and was elected as MP for Central Nova, Nova Scotia. His nine-year prime ministership was distinguished by both strength and division, as he worked to bring Quebec into the constitutional fold through measures like as Meech Lake and the Charlottetown Accord.
