Thailand seeks to become a halal hub

Thailand has approved numerous measures to establish itself as Southeast Asia’s new halal hub by 2028, with the goal of promoting Thai food and products around the world and increasing tourism. The cabinet approved the formation of a national halal industry committee and a Thai halal industry center, as well as plans to construct a halal food center in collaboration with Brunei and Malaysia.
The strategy will improve Thailand’s GDP by 1.2%, or 55 billion baht ($1.53 billion). The global halal business was worth $2.4 trillion last year, and consumer spending on halal products is predicted to increase at a compounded annual growth rate of 7.5%, reaching $2.8 trillion by 2025.
Thailand is ranked third in Asia, after Indonesia and Malaysia. The government will focus on five areas: food, fashion, pharmaceuticals and herbal goods, cocoa, services and tourism. The proposal will generate approximately 100,000 employment each year and promote tourism.
