Starting in mid-February, detainees at the Central Jail were granted health insurance coverage. The Jail Management Department implemented the initiative, which aims to provide simple access to health care for inmates who have been in jail for more than a year.
Each inmate is given Rs 3500 health insurance policy, which expires when they fulfill their jail sentence. The government also gives medical treatment through the Central Prison Hospital, which has 30 beds and provides services such as OPD, lab, X-ray, ECG, ultrasound, dental, mental, dermatological, and eye care. The hospital also organizes health camps for inmates. There are presently 3,721 convicts at Central Jail and other prisons participating in the scheme.
