Hun Sen, Cambodia’s former prime minister, has formally returned to politics after standing down last year. The 71-year-old legislator and ruling party chairman voted for a Senate seat in the country’s highest body, the Senate, and has said that he aims to become its President. This will allow the king to operate as head of state when abroad. Four political parties are running in the election: Hun Sen’s ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), the Royalist Funsinpec Party, and two minor opposition parties. The majority of eligible voters are members of the CPP, which won a clean sweep in the Senate in the previous election. Sebastian Strongio, author of “Hun Sense Cambodia,” stated that Hun Sen’s win is almost certain, as the Hun family’s dominance grows. The National Election Commission is anticipated to release the official results in a few weeks. Voters in the capital, Phnom Penh, want Hun Sen back in power because he has extensive expertise and the country would grow.
