The National Assembly of France was interrupted when a politician raised a Palestinian flag during a discussion on whether Paris should accept Palestinian statehood. Sebastien Delogu, a lower house member for La France Insoumise (LFI), was suspended for 15 days and had his parliamentary pay reduced by half for two months. The incident happened when Trade Minister Franck Riester was answering a question from another LFI member.
National Assembly President Yael Braun-Pivet condemned the flag protest, describing Delogu’s actions as reprehensible. The issue arose on the same day that Spain officially recognized Palestine as an independent state. The diplomatic initiatives come during a period of fierce violence in Gaza, as Israel conducts its ground assault in Rafah. French President Emmanuel Macron has called for a two-state solution to the issue, but he has stated that Paris should not acknowledge Palestinian statehood in a “emotional” setting.
