The almost three-year conflict in Ukraine is about to come to a conclusion when US Secretary of State Marco Rubio meets with Russian authorities in Saudi Arabia. The discussions come after Russian President Vladimir Putin gave top officials instructions to start war talks over the phone with President Donald Trump. In the early interactions between the Trump administration and Moscow, Riyadh has helped negotiate a prisoner swap last week and is also participating in discussions with Washington about the future of the Gaza Strip.
Along with White House Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s national security advisor Mike Waltz, Rubio will meet with Russian officials in Saudi Arabia. The negotiations, which are anticipated to come before a meeting between the presidents of the US and Russia, are among the first high-level face-to-face meetings between Russian and US officials.
