US President Joe Biden has approved legislation preventing the United States from importing unirradiated low-enriched uranium from Russia. The Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act aims to limit the country’s reliance on Russia for civilian nuclear power. The law, which was enacted by both the House and the Senate, states that unirradiated uranium produced in Russia or by a Russian corporation may not be imported into the United States for 90 days following its passage. It also grants exemptions until January 1, 2028 to utilities who shut down nuclear reactors owing to a loss of Russian uranium supplies. The law also frees up $2.72 billion in government funds for the restart of additional enrichment capacity in the United States.
