Coca-Cola claims that because of Trump’s tariffs, it may use more plastic

If President Donald Trump’s tariffs increase the cost of aluminum cans, Coca-Cola’s CEO, James Quincey, has warned that the business may have to offer more beverages in plastic bottles in the US. By 2035, the company’s sustainability goal of using 50% recycled materials in its packaging has been lowered to 35% to 40%. For six years running, Coca-Cola has been named the “top global plastic polluter” by environmental organizations.

“Coca-Cola can continue to offer other packaging options to compete in the affordability space if one package experiences an increase in input costs,” Quincey added. Additionally, he stressed that packaging accounts for a very minor portion of Coca-Cola’s expenses. A 25% tax on all imports is expected to increase the cost of cans because the US imports about half of the aluminum it uses. According to Trump, no specific goods or nations would be immune from the regulations.
