Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Indira Rana has resigned from her post while her term is still in effect. She voluntarily resigned today despite the practice that the Speaker and Deputy Speaker’s term of office will continue until the day before the nomination of direct candidacies in the upcoming elections.
The Election Commission has set the time for today and Monday to submit the closed list for the proportional representation for the upcoming elections to be held on Falgun 21. The Federal Parliament Secretariat has stated that the term of office of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker will continue until the day before the nomination of direct candidacies, based on past practice.
Speaker Devraj Ghimire, on the other hand, is said to be preparing to leave the day before the nomination of direct candidacies, i.e., Magh 5. According to Federal Parliament Secretariat Spokesperson Ekram Giri, Agni Prasad Sapkota, who was the Speaker during the last election, had taken leave the day before the nomination of direct candidacies. He said that the current Speaker can work according to the same practice.
Article 91 of the Constitution of Nepal, Sub-section 6 (a) of the provisions relating to the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives states that in the event of the dissolution of the House of Representatives, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives who are in office shall remain in office until the day before filing their candidacy for the next election to the House of Representatives.
