Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi, topped the list of most polluted cities
The air monitoring website iQair has placed Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital, as one of the world’s most polluted cities. The city is surrounded by heavy haze, with levels of PM2.5 pollution (cancer-causing tiny particles) more than 24 times higher than the World Health Organization’s annual limits. In recent years, the city has been consistently ranked as one of the world’s most polluted, with reasons such as enormous development, everyday motorcycle and automobile pollution, and carbon emissions from coal mining and burning in the north exacerbating the problem.
Last month, scores of flights were canceled owing to poor visibility and rising air pollution. According to a World Bank assessment, 40% of Hanoi’s population is exposed to exposures nearly five times greater than WHO standards. Air pollution poses a major health danger, including stroke, heart disease, and lung cancer.
