Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro is accused of a coup, including plotting to poison Lula

After losing the 2022 election, former President Jair Bolsonaro was charged by Brazil’s prosecutor general of trying to stage a coup in order to retain power. Among the accusations is a plot to assassinate a Supreme Court justice and poison President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. ‘Green and Yellow Dagger,’ the criminal gang, reportedly devised a strategy to assault institutions and overthrow the democratic order. An 884-page report outlining the plan was issued by the Federal Police, who claimed that there was a deliberate attempt to undermine the democratic process. After reviewing the accusations, the Supreme Court will decide whether to allow Bolsonaro to go to trial. Because of the judge’s decision that he misused his authority and raised unjustified concerns about the nation’s electronic voting system, he is not permitted to run in the 2026 election.
