Former Philippine President Duterte was taken into custody at Manila’s international airport

On March 11, 2025, former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was taken into custody at Manila’s international airport by the International Criminal Court (ICC). He was charged with a crime against humanity, which was connected to the arrest. Police arrested Duterte when he landed from Hong Kong. Lawyers, aides, and medical professionals protested that they were not allowed to approach him after the detention caused a stir at the airport.

There were at least three convictions against law enforcement officials who were part of the anti-drug effort. Despite the Duterte administration’s protests, ICC appeals judges decided in 2023 that the inquiry may proceed. The Marcos government has stated that it is prepared to assist if the ICC issues a Red Notice to international police to arrest Duterte.
