Six months after his return from self-exile, Thaksin Shinawatra, the former prime minister of Thailand, was granted parole. Due to health issues, Thaksin was moved from a prison in Bangkok to a hospital. He had been living overseas in self-exile since 2008 and had held the position of prime minister for the nation of Southeast Asia from 2001 to 2006. Among the 930 prisoners granted freedom this month is the 74-year-old former prime minister. According to Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, Thaksin’s parole release was authorized by law.
