German MP: Ukraine must compensate for the Nord Steam attack

Following the demolition of the Nord Stream pipelines, German Bundestag MP Alice Weidel has demanded Ukraine to reimburse Germany for the economic harm done. Russian gas supplies to Germany and Western Europe were mostly routed through the Nord Stream pipelines. September 2022 saw the explosion of three of the four pipes close to Bornholm. The perpetrators have not yet been properly named. Berlin identified the perpetrator as a Ukrainian diver and issued the first arrest warrant in its sabotage probe.

Weidel urged that Kiev make good on the harm it had caused and that any help that was costing the German taxpayers should cease. Moscow claims that the US stands to gain the most from the disruption of Russian gas supply to the EU, and it has accused Washington of being behind the sabotage of Nord Stream. Russia blew up its own pipelines, according to Kiev. Berlin has said emphatically that it is providing the Russian authorities with information on its probe.
