Just hours before the implementation of a new rule that would have banned the app, TikTok went down in the United States. Unless the departing Biden administration promised that the ban would not be implemented, the social networking site threatened to go black on Sunday.
When Donald Trump takes office on Monday, he has stated that he will “most likely” give TikTok a 90-day respite from a ban. TikTok.com was not displaying videos, and users claimed that the app had been deleted from the US app stores of Google and Apple. The White House stated that action must be taken by the next government.
Last April, the Supreme Court upheld a regulation that prohibited the app from being used in the United States unless its parent company, ByteDance, located in China, sold the platform by Sunday. As of right now, ByteDance has not done so. The law, according to TikTok, infringes on the rights of its 170 million members to free expression.
