India confirms citizens ‘signed up’ for the Russian army

The Indian foreign ministry confirmed that some individuals have signed up for support jobs with the Russian army and is coordinating with Moscow to ensure their release. Around 18 Indians were stuck in border towns along the frontlines of Russia’s war in Ukraine, with at least three “forced” to fight alongside Russian forces. The Indian Embassy has repeatedly raised this issue with the appropriate Russian authorities in order to expedite their release. According to the Hindu newspaper, recruiters in Dubai duped Indians with promises of great pay and a Russian passport. When the Indians arrived in Moscow, the Russian Army taught them to handle weaponry and ammunition before shipping them to the frontlines in January.
