India’s Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, has declared that the government will not change Tesla’s standards for accessing the Indian market, but will instead develop policies to entice worldwide investment. Tesla is proposing tariff concessions to offset the customs cost for cars imported into the country, which currently imposes a 100% customs tax on automobiles worth more than $40,000 and a 70% import fee on those worth less than that.
The government is developing partnerships with possible investors from Europe, the United States, the Far East, Japan, and Korea. TATA presently dominates the Indian EV industry, with four models. In 2021, Musk expressed concern about India’s high import charges and requested temporary tariff relief for electric vehicles.
