The position of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has become vacant following his death in an attack involving the US and Israel. Until a new Supreme Leader is selected, Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, a member of the powerful constitutional body, has been appointed to the post.
He has been appointed to the 3-member interim council. The 67-year-old Arafi is a member of the powerful constitutional oversight body, the Guardian Council. This committee will also play a role in selecting the new Supreme Leader in the future. He was appointed to the council by the powerful mediating body, the Expediency Council.
Now, Arafi will work in the interim council alongside hardline cleric and Judiciary Chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i and President Masoud Pezeshkian. Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and security chief Ali Larijani are also expected to play a decisive role. However, media outlets have indicated that the actual balance of power is not yet clear.
Furthermore, the second commander of the IRGC has also reportedly been killed. This killing is said to have occurred in less than a year.
The new head of the powerful military-economic organization has not yet been announced. Telegram channels associated with the IRGC view Ahmad Vahidi, the former deputy chief, as a potential successor for that position.
