Kuwait’s Emir, Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, has nominated Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid al-Sabah to be crown prince. Sheikh al-Khalid previously served as Prime Minister from 2019 until 2022, during which time opposition MPs questioned him about corruption. Kuwait’s elected assembly has more authority than analogous legislatures in other Gulf monarchies, with the ability to enact and veto legislation, interrogate ministers, and file no-confidence moves against top government officials. Sheikh al-Khalid was born in Kuwait in 1953 and earned a B.A. in Political Science from Kuwait University in 1977.
