Mauritius is canceling flights and schools due to a powerful tropical cyclone that slammed the Indian Ocean island on Thursday. The storm, dubbed Eleanor, was moving at 20 km/h and was around 200 kilometers northeast of the country. Air Mauritius, the country’s principal international airport operator, has declared that air services will be suspended and all scheduled departures will be canceled. Public transportation and schools have both been closed. Mauritius, noted for its white sandy beaches and blue-green waters, is frequently in the path of cyclones, with approximately a dozen storms or cyclones forming in the Southwest Indian Ocean every year.
