On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Communist Party of China, Chinese President Xi Jinping made a commitment to accomplish “reunification” with Taiwan while demonstrating Beijing’s military power. The Communist Party has sworn to “reunify” with the democratic self-governing island, even if it means using force. It claims Taiwan as its own. Nonetheless, a large portion of Taiwanese people consider themselves to be uniquely Taiwanese and do not wish to join Communist China. Tension has increased and fears of a military conflict have been raised as a result of Xi’s increased rhetoric and aggressiveness against the democratic island. Beijing has increased up military operations related to the island and designated Taiwan’s president, Lai Ching-te, as a “dangerous separatist.”
