Following the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, the leader of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), protests broke out in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Das, the leader of Chittagong’s Pundarik Dham, is well-known for supporting the rights of religious minorities and has engaged in discussions with political parties to maintain harmony within the community. An accusation that he and others had denigrated Bangladesh’s national flag served as the basis for the arrest. At a Hindu community demonstration in Chittagong, Das and others allegedly defiled the national flag, according to former BNP leader Firoz Khan.
In order to preserve intercommunal harmony, Das has advocated for the rights of religious minorities and has gotten backing from political groups such as Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh. Das is headquartered in Chittagong, where protests also started. Around 3:30 p.m., Das was taken into custody at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, when plainclothes officers allegedly pretended to be detectives.
