The Taliban have boycotted a UN-sponsored conference in Qatar, claiming that their delegation should be acknowledged as the sole representatives of Afghanistan. The Taliban government, commanded by Zabihullah Mujahid, requested that the UN convene a meeting with Amir Khan Muttaqi, Afghanistan’s acting foreign minister. No country recognizes the Taliban government, which assumed power in Kabul in 2021, and the United Nations does not recognize its authority over Afghanistan either. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres branded the Taliban’s demands “unacceptable” and urged the removal of barriers to women’s education and work. The Taliban emphasizes that women’s status is a domestic issue and advocates for a realistic and pragmatic approach free of unilateral impositions, accusations, and pressure.
