President Donald Trump on Monday requested a “pause” in US assistance to Ukraine in an effort to persuade Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to join in peace talks with Russia.
The action comes just days after a catastrophic Oval Office meeting in which Trump and Vice President JD Vance chastised Zelenskyy for what they saw as insufficient gratitude for the more than $180 billion in military help the US has delivered to Ukraine since Russia invaded three years ago.
A White House official said Trump is keen on negotiating a peace agreement and wants Zelenskyy to be “committed” toit.The official also stated that the United States was “pausing and reviewing” its help to “ensure that it is contributing to a solution.” The official spoke anonymously to share the aid.
According to the official, the order will be in place until Trump believes that Ukraine has showed a commitment to peace discussions with Russia.
The suspension of military aid comes five years after Trump withheld congressionally authorized assistance to Ukraine in order to compel Zelenskyy to start an inquiry into Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential candidate at the time.
