The three political parties Nepali Congress, Nepal Communist Party (UML) and Nepali Communist Party, which have been sitting in the House meetings as the ruling party, the main party or the opposition during the parliamentary journey, will now sit on the same bench.
The results of the House of Representatives member elections held on March 21 have determined the immediate parliamentary seat of these three parties as the opposition bench. Earlier, the identity of the three major parties in the country had been in the hands of the country’s three main parties.
In the interim parliament formed after the establishment of democracy in 2063 BS and the then CPN (Maoist) joining the peace process, all three parties were on the same bench. However, in the assembly formed after the Constituent Assembly election in 2064 BS and subsequent parliaments, when any two of the parties among the Congress, UML and CPN (Maoist) were in power, one party usually sat in the opposition.
This is the first time that all three parties are going to sit on the same bench. This time, out of the three parties, the Congress will be the main opposition and the other two parties will be the opposition. There will be three parties on a single opposition bench. After the election of members of the House of Representatives held on Falgun 21, the members of the House of Representatives took the oath of office and secrecy only today.
At the ceremony, the senior member of the House, Arjun Narsingh KC, administered the oath to the newly elected members of parliament. During the oath-taking, the members of the three parties stood on the opposition bench and took the oath. The Federal Parliament Secretariat has arranged the benches for the parties to sit on based on the number of seats of the political parties.
