Despite the possibility of a third American veto, the UN Security Council is scheduled to vote on a fresh draft resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The Algerian-prepared letter protests the violent displacement and cruel treatment of Palestinian citizens, calling for an urgent humanitarian truce and the release of all Hamas hostages. The resolution did not denounce Hamas’s October 7 attack, which claimed the lives of some 1,160 persons in southern Israel, the majority of whom were unarmed civilians. The US has vowed to veto Algeria’s plan and warned that it is unacceptable. Robert Wood, the deputy US ambassador to the UN, thinks that the discussions will be jeopardized by the hostage-release process in Gaza and that the council’s efforts will not offer situational support. The US, which has exercised its veto power over the last two drafts, is set to submit a substitute.
