Over Rs 36 billion to be spent on reconstruction of damage caused by the Genji movement

The cost of reconstruction, repair and construction of new structures caused by the physical damage caused by the Genji movement on Bhadra 23 and 24 is estimated to be Rs 36.3 billion. The five-member committee formed by the Council of Ministers on Asoj 5 under the coordination of the Secretary of the National Planning Commission to assess the damage caused by the movement and prepare a reconstruction plan for public structures has prepared a report on the cost.

‘According to the reconstruction action plan, Rs 36.3 billion 21 million is estimated to be spent on reconstruction/repair of damaged buildings in the public sector and purchase/repair of vehicles and other physical items,’ the report said. Rs 19.98 billion 98 million has been estimated for reconstruction of damaged buildings, Rs 6.16 billion 80 million for purchase/repair of vehicles and Rs 10.14 billion 42 million for purchase and repair of other physical items. According to the report prepared by the committee, a total of Rs 84.45 billion 77 million has been incurred in the movement. This amount is 1.38 percent of the country’s gross domestic product and 4.30 percent of the current fiscal year’s budget.

Of the total damage amount, 53 percent is in the government and public sectors, 40 percent in the private sector, and 7 percent in the community and other sectors. Province-wise, Bagmati has suffered the most damage. The report states that this province’s share of the total damage is 66.5 percent.

Based on the amount, Koshi Province has suffered 10.24 billion rupees, Madhesh Province 4.92 billion rupees, Bagmati Province 56.23 billion rupees, Gandaki Province 4.1 billion rupees, Lumbini 5.99 billion rupees, Karnali 620 million rupees, and Sudurpaschim Province 2.4 billion rupees.

‘Due to the circumstances that arose during the movement, it appears that there has been a loss of 13.87 billion 5.6 billion in the production of goods and services,’ the report states. ‘In terms of employment, it appears that there has been a direct impact on the employment of 2,999 people, of whom 2,353 people have lost their jobs completely.’ A total of 2,671 buildings have been damaged during the movement, of which 79.8 percent are public buildings.

The details state that 39.31 billion 75 million were damaged in buildings, 12.93 billion 61 million in vehicles, 20.36 billion 40 million in other physical assets, 2.81 billion 34 million in cash and valuables, and the remaining 9.26 billion 67 million in other temporary assets and personal property. The report also mentions the human losses incurred during the movement. A total of 77 people died. Of these, 73 were men and 4 were women. Of the dead, 39 were in the age group of 13 to 28 years.
