‘Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence’ were originally mentioned in the 1954 Agreement on Trade and Intercourse between China and India, and Chinese President Xi Jinping has emphasised them. Mutual respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, non-aggression, non-interference in domestic affairs, equality, and mutual benefit are among the principles that have set a new standard for international relations and the rule of law. Jinping has backed programs such as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to expand China’s influence worldwide. These include plans to build a Global South Research Center, invest in infrastructure projects in smaller nations, and offer 1,000 Global South countries ‘Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence Scholarship of Excellence’ training opportunities.
